Wheatland County operates eight waste transfer sites at various locations throughout the Municipality. These facilities are located in proximity to the communities of Strathmore, Carseland, Rockyford, Standard, Gleichen, Cluny, Rosebud and Hussar. The County partners with the villages of Standard, Rockyford and Hussar to cost share the transfer sites adjacent to these villages.
These facilities are intended to provide a means for County residents to dispose of household solid waste. This program was initiated in the 1970’s as part of a Province wide move to minimize the number of largely unregulated land fill operations. The household waste from these sites is collected by a trucking contractor on a scheduled pick-up route, who then delivers the material to a regional land fill site near Drumheller. This site, operated by the Drumheller and District Solid Waste Management Association (a consortium of local municipalities) is closely monitored and regulated by Alberta Environment.
HAZARDOUS CHEMCIALS (please be aware that these chemicals may be disposed of at “Hazardous Waste Round-ups” held each year at Standard and Rockyford)
For more information regarding materials being accepted, the availability of bin space, or any other information about the waste transfer facilities, inpiduals are asked to call their respective sites. Wheatland County residents are also encouraged to call their local site attendant before loading large, heavy, or questionable items or simply to avoid the inconvenience of a particular service not being available at a certain time (eg bins too full). Residents may also call the County Administration Office at 403-934-3321 for general information or if a problem should arise.
